15 Fun Ways to Get your Kids Reading MORE
  • Make it early, the younger the better. Even babies can enjoy board books! Starting with picture books for your toddlers and up, and then heading into chapter books some time around age 8 or so
  • Make it a time that you look forward to. Maybe you’re reading before bed together, or on the weekends, or at lunch or in the afternoons. Set a rhythm of reading as a tradition and looked-forward to time
  • Take steps towards a family culture of reading, making reading a fun part of your daily rhythms. And when DAD is also on board, reading aloud to or with the family when he can and is available, sets the tone of the importance of reading, the whole family will catch on
  • Make library visits an event!  We have often maxed out the checkout limit and take our own tote bags to carry the load home 
  • Build your family library, You can do it CHEAP! Used book stores and Goodwill have very inexpensive books to make owning a family library very affordable 
  • Join the Outdoor Reading Club! Download the free book record list and keep track of books read. You decide the rewards. You can do it as a family, or with a group! Enjoy reading together, outside!

Ideas for Younger Kids Reading:

  • Play library, organizing our favorite books by section and printing out and laminating personalized family library cards so we can borrow books from one another – they even sell the classic book check out cards on ETSY
  • Create your own prize or awards system for reading completed, both with your emerging and independent readers. They will revel in completing a challenge to earn a prize! Check out the Outdoor Reading Club, and make your own rewards (ice cream, dollar store visit, etc.) 
  • Have picture books galore around the house and display your favorites! Change or rotate the books every so often depending on what are the current favorites 
  • Try having special READING HATS for read aloud time that you wear at certain times
  • Audio books count of course! Mike Mulligan was a fave for my littles, Peter Rabbit, Wind in The Willows, etc. We’d always have an audio book playing favorite stories driving around in the car

Some Ideas for Older Kids: 

  • Make starting chapter books and SERIES a big deal. Get the family cheering on your reader and in a race to collect a series like The Magic Treehouse at used book stores (They usually go for $1.50 or so)
  • Make favorite books an EVENT. Does the book call for a certain food or recipe? Does the book happen in a certain setting? Make the book pages come to life with celebration
  • READ UNTIL YOU FALL ASLEEP nights are a big hit! Especially on the weekends, let your older readers read by flashlight
  • Audio books continue with epics and adventures like Lamplighters Series, perfect to listen to while playing Legos
